An archaeological test pit evaluation was undertaken on the site in March and April 2017. A total of nine machine and hand-excavated test pits were undertaken, with all sub-ploughsoil alluvial deposits being hand-excavated in 50mm ‘spits’ and dry sieved through a 10mm mesh, as well as a single 50mm deep ‘spit’ of the underlying natural gravel. The fieldwork was specifically undertaken to assess the archaeological potential of the site to contain Late Upper Palaeolithic (LUP) deposits, or surfaces with the potential to contain LUP lithic scatters; as had been recorded from numerous phases of archaeological investigations to the immediate south of the site, at Farndon Fields, from 1991 to the present day. A small assemblage of unstratified worked flints (39) which was predominantly composed of debitage was recorded during the evaluation. The low density of the worked flint assemblage, the truncated alluvial stratigraphic sequence of the site and the palaeotopographic context of the site combined, all strongly indicate that the site has negligible or very low potential to contain in-situ LUP lithic scatters. A larger assemblage of post-medieval material (16th – 20th century) was recorded from topsoil, subsoil and alluvial deposits. This includes pottery, ceramic building material, clay pipe, glass, metalwork, fired clay and slag. However, single sherds of residual, later prehistoric/Roman and medieval (11th – 16th century) pottery, were also recovered.
