Abstract/Summary
An archaeological field evaluation by trial trenching was undertaken on land at Gateford Park, Gateford, Worksop, Nottinghamshire. The site lies on the edge of modern settlement in an area containing cropmarks that possibly indicates former activity. A geophysical survey of the site identified linear and discrete features, possibly enclosure ditches and other features associated with an Iron Age or Romano-British settlement.
13 trenches were excavated on the western and eastern parts of the site. All but three of the thirteen trenches contained archaeological features, many of which contained Romano-British pottery dating from the 2nd century AD. These were mostly linear features probably representing enclosure ditches and gullies, most likely associated with the outlying enclosures of a Romano-British farm or settlement.
