An archaeological evaluation by trial trenching was undertaken on land at Thoresby Colliery, Edwinstowe, Nottinghamshire, in advance of the determination of a planning application for a mixed use business and residential development. The site lies immediately to the south of the former Thoresby Colliery, within the National and Regional Character Area of Sherwood. The northern part of the proposed development area is occupied by a large coal tip associated with the colliery. Thirty-six trenches were excavated across three fields in the southern portion of site, targeting geophysical anomalies as well as apparently blank areas. Trial trenching revealed archaeological remains in the western and central parts of the site, located in five trenches. The features encountered comprised five ditches and a pit. On the basis of the artefacts recovered, two ditches, with a ditch re-cut, appeared to be modern in date. The remaining linear features were undated. A pit, which contained possible hearth waste, also produced two sherds of possibly residual Romano-British greyware, suggesting a very low level of archaeological activity occurring in the wider area. The remaining 31 evaluation trenches were archaeologically sterile, other than a small group of topsoil finds, comprising a worked flint, a sherd of medieval pottery, a medieval fishing weight and a post-medieval cloth seal.
