Abstract/Summary
Archaeological evaluation and excavation at Church Street, Cropwell Bishop was undertaken in the winter of 2020–21.
Early medieval pits contained assemblages of cereal remains including from rivet wheat dated to cal. AD 780–990 (1131±31; UBA-48175). One of these pits contained an upright horse skull that may have been a votive deposit and may be evidence of Scandinavian cultural influence. An enclosure system dated by the presence of pottery to the 13th to 15th centuries was defined first by ditches, then by postholes after the ditches had become filled in. The enclosure system funnelled animals onto a central area of hardstanding where they may have been processed in small numbers. A nearby deposit sealing the early medieval pits had been disturbed, probably by animal hooves. A further pit contained the articulated skeleton of a juvenile dog alongside two sherds of medieval pottery.
