Research and survey were undertaken to inform understanding and assess significance of the site of Fountain Dale. Part of the site formerly formed part of Lindhurst Wood, part of the forest of Sherwood, and a moated site (SM) within the woodland is a contender for the documented forester's lodge. A series of lakes were created in the early 19th century, and have been identified as part of a catchment irrigation system, later planted with ornamental species and used as part of the designed landscape and pleasure grounds associated with Fountain Dale House.
