Description
The majority of the route investigated lay within the boundaries of the modern road or its adjacent verges. One area, however, (area C) was situated within fields; requiring topsoil stripping and the creation of an easement in advance of trenching. Trench depths varied according to gradient, though the width remained approximately constant at 0.86m. The depth of the pipe trench was between 1.3 and 2.8m below the modern ground surface and, in all five areas, the digging extended into the natural Sherwood Sandstone. According to the aerial photographic plots, the sites of some eighteen individual cropmarks were crossed by the pipeline. However, only five features were actually identified during the trenching. The absence of features was attributed to disturbance from previous road construction and service trenching. Features tended to be better preserved in the road verges. Subsoils were identified intermittently within the areas monitored and suggests that thin glacial deposits are probably more widespread than the isolated patches mapped by the Geological Survey. (1)
