Description

The proposed development comprises a 1.2ha roughly T-shaped plot of land, bounded to the south by Church Street, by open fields to the north and by domestic properties to the east and west. A public right of way runs through the centre of the site. The programme of trial trenching consisted of the excavation of ten trenches measuring 30m by 1.8m. The vast majority of features exposed comprised furrows, running east-northeast to west-southwest and corresponding to the ridge and furrow identified by the preceding geophysical survey and earthwork survey. A small number of linear features and pits/postholes were also exposed, some cutting the ridge and furrow and some cut by it. One ditch corresponds to a field boundary shown on historic mapping. Two fragments of Roman CBM were recovered from a ditch, and a sherd of medieval pottery. A Saxon strap end was recovered from a furrow and, although is a fairly significant find, it represents nothing more than casual loss. The evidence suggests that the site has a limited archaeological potential.
