Abstract/Summary
A programme of trial trenching was undertaken on land off Church Street, Beckingham, Nottinghamshire, as a condition of planning consent for a residential development.
The proposed development area lies in the north of the village of Beckingham. Six residual late Neolithic flints were recovered to the south of the village, and a Roman pottery scatter was recorded in the southwest of the village. Evidence of early medieval or Saxon occupation has been recorded at Station Road. Medieval ridge and furrow has been identified within the proposed development area as a result of a geophysical survey and earthwork survey.
Ten trenches were excavated across the proposed development area, each measuring 30m long and 1.8m wide. The vast majority of features exposed comprised furrows, running east-northeast to west-southwest and corresponding to the ridge and furrow identified by the preceding geophysical survey and earthwork survey.
A small number of linear features and pits/postholes were also exposed, some cutting the ridge and furrow and some cut by it. One ditch corresponds to a field boundary shown on historic mapping. Two fragments of Roman CBM were recovered from a ditch, and a sherd of medieval pottery from another trench. A Saxon strap end was recovered from a trench and, although is a fairly significant find, it represents nothing more than casual loss.
The evidence suggests that the site has a limited archaeological potential
