The proposed development area lies to the west of the village. The ‘PDA’ comprises mostly agricultural land with Woodend Farm and associated outbuildings to the south. The first field, to the west covers c.0.48ha while the second field to the east measures c.3.17ha. Twenty 20 x 2.1m trenches s were machine excavated across the site, which sampled an initial area of c. 840 m2. The western area, denoted by the first field, has potentially identified tantalising structural evidence, which taken in context with two sherds of Roman pottery recovered from the topsoil in 2 evaluation trenches, may point to evidence of Roman occupation. To the east, archaeological evidence is sparse, several ditches and a gully were encountered during the evaluation, albeit undated, they represents minimal evidence of agricultural land use of the site. Finds recovered from the site vary, the western area produced Roman grey ware whilst the eastern area produced 19th century domestic ware. While it is possible that Roman activity may be represented to the west, the sherds recovered may merely be chance finds and are certainly residual. To the east quantities of residual 19th century pottery may represent evidence of night soiling or dumping.
