An archaeological evaluation was undertaken on Land at Woodend Farm, Shireoaks, Nottinghamshire. The evaluation comprised the excavation of 20 trenches targeted to assess the presence or absence of archaeological remains within the proposed development area. The trenches were positioned using a Leica Smartrover GPS and were targeted specifically to evaluate anomalies identified from geophysical surveying. Evaluation trenching has provided limited evidence of archaeological features within the proposed development area as a whole. In the western area of the site potential structural evidence and the recovery of Roman pottery from the topsoil may indicate Roman occupation in the area. Trenching to the east has identified several drainage ditches which could not be dated.
