Description
The proposed development area lies to the south of Clifton directly east of Barton in Fabis and to the north of Gotham, Nottinghamshire. The northern edges of the site follows the parish boundary of Barton, the eastern edge is defined by the Fairham Brook. The southern edge follows the parish boundary between Barton and Gotham and the western edge lies to the east of Barton in Fabis and Brands Hill, and west of the A453.
The programme of archaeological trenching was undertaken to evaluate a sample of the total area of the proposed development site comprising a total of 22 trenches all measuring 50m by 2m. The trenches were positioned to target potential archaeological features identified through the geophysical survey.
Topsoil and subsoil deposits were encountered in all trenches which sealed natural deposits ranging from silty sandy clay to clay deposits (approximately 0.5m below ground level). The only archaeological features identified were two ditches and plough truncated furrows. The finds consisted of just a single sherd of Iron Age Pottery from a ditch where tiny fragments of bone were also present.
