Abstract/Summary
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken on land to the south of Clifton, Nottinghamshire ahead of the proposed construction of a residential development.
A total of 22 trenches were excavated measuring 2m by 50m. These were positioned to target potential archaeological features identified during a previous geophysical survey, within the proposed development area.
Topsoil and subsoil deposits were encountered in all trenches which sealed natural deposits ranging from silty sandy clay to clay deposits (approximately 0.5m below ground level). The only archaeological features identified were two ditches and plough truncated furrows. The finds consisted of just a single sherd of Iron Age Pottery from a ditch where tiny fragments of bone were also present.
