Description

The proposed development area is located to the east of the Radcliffe-on-Trent village, bounded by Shelford Road to the north, extant development to the west, a railway line and scrub to the south and farmland to the east. The programe of archaeological mitigation comprised the supervised mechanical excavation of an area measuring c. 3.25 ha to the first archaeologically sensitive horizon followed by strategic hand excavation and recording of archaeological remains present. Topsoil and subsoil were excavated in spits no greater than 100mm using a 360 degree tracked excavator fitted with a toothless ditching bucket. Spoil was checked for artefacts including the use of a metal detector before being stored a safe distance from the excavation edge. The results of the evaluation indicated that significant archaeological remains relating to settlement activity of Late Iron Age and Early Romano-British date were well-preserved towards the western extent of the development footprint.
