A programme of archaeological strip, map and record was undertaken on land off Shelford Road, Radcliffe-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire. The work was carried out between 3rd September and 9th December 2018 in advance of the development of up to 400 dwellings, a primary school, health centre and associated infrastructure including highway and pedestrian access, open space and structural landscaping. This phase of mitigation was preceded by a staged programme of evaluation comprising a desk-based assessment, geophysical survey and trial trenching. The evaluation was designed to establish the baseline conditions and archaeological potential of the site, with the information yielded from the investigations then incorporated into the planning application. The results of the evaluation indicated that significant archaeological remains relating to settlement activity of Late Iron Age and Early Romano-British date were well-preserved towards the western extent of the development footprint. As a consequence of this, a programme of strip map and record on a c.3.25 ha area prior to development works.
