Description
The site comprises c. 27ha within a single field situated to the west of High Marnham. The site is situated to the north of Polly Taylors Road on arable land planted with a young crop. It is bounded to the north by a portion of the disused Lancashire, Derbyshire, and East Coast railway line, to the west by Crabtree Lane, and to the east by further arable land.
The cart-based survey was undertaken using an eight channel SenSYS MX V3 system containing eight FGM650 sensors. Readings are taken every 20MHz (between 0.05 and 0.1m).
The geophysical survey has detected magnetic anomalies associated with archaeological and possible archaeological origins in the forms of small, fragmented enclosures and possible medieval former field divisions.
More recent former field boundaries have been detected along with anomalies consistent with modern ploughing and field drains. A large modern electricity pylon and its associated overhead cables are represented within the south of the Site. Magnetic disturbance along the western and northern periphery of the survey area is due to the proximity to Crabtree Lane in the west and a disused length of the Lancashire, Derbyshire, and East Coast railway line in the north.
A spread of geological anomalies has been recorded within the Site which are likely to be a result of desiccation cracking within the subsurface soils. Overall, the archaeological
potential of the Site is deemed to be moderate in the southeast, and low elsewhere.
