Description

The site is situated in largely open countryside to the southeast of the village of Bulcote. Bulcote Farm was built in 1904 by the Nottingham Corporation as a model farm to help dispose of sewage from the city. The farm complex is situated on low-lying ground to the north of the river Trent and is separated from Bulcote village by the Lincoln to Nottingham railway line. The evaluation involved the investigation of 20 trenches each measuring 20m x 2m. The extent of Bulcote Farm in 1914 was significantly greater than the standing complex that can be seen today. A portion of the Farm, including four large brick buildings, was demolished and buried under tarmac. These were re-exposed within the evaluation, specifically within six trenches. For example, to the eastern end of one trench, masonry was exposed, directly in line with the standing buildings of the complex. Despite the archaeology identified near to the site, beyond the foundations of the former farm buildings, no archaeological features were exposed, and no finds were recovered.
