Full Description

Originally textile mill - c 1750. Stonework sound but roof and floorings mainly disappeared. Originally had external water wheel on side of R Idle. In 1801 there was a 16 hp steam engine, 816 spindles, 15 with carding in 11 frames, 8 mules. Used as a school and then a malthouse. Probable demolition, much damage (09/07/1965). (1)

The Old Malthouse was sited to the rear of Portland Square, near to the River Idle. (Calls it "Smedleys Buildings", but this was elsewhere). The whole site has now disappeared under late C20 rebuilding. In 1783 John Bacon opened a water powered mule works on the site. It possibly had a 16hp Boulton and Watt steam engine later on. It reverted to corn milling in the C19 . (5)
