SMEATON'S ARCHES
John Smeaton's causeway along the Great North Road. Built 1770, to provide a dry route over flood plain. Still in good repair and use today. SW side is 1920s road widening. See archive file and HBR for details. 1 print, 203y/36, held by RCHME. (1)
Viaduct or flood road. By Smeaton, 1770. Carries sections of the Great North Road across the flood plain of the Trent. (2)

Brick vault uncovered during car park construction. It is believed that this previously unknown arch was constructed to carry the Kelham or Ollerton turnpike and is located running NW at an angle from the previously known arches beneath the road in the vicinity of the Castle Station. In the early C19 the construction of … the Midland Railway line from Nottingham to Lincoln was undertaken (and) the junction of the Great North Road and Kelham Road was moved N. The height of the structure had been much reduced prior to the construction of the cattle market in 1886. (5)
