Full Description

4 ring ditches - 2 penannular. (1)

Cropmarks of 3 circles, 15m, 20m and 40m in diameter respectively, and possibly barrows or ritual circles N of Nornay. Also faint traces of possible field boundaries as well as a possible 4th circle. (2)

Morph: 110.2.1-3 & 5 Bronze Age enclosures. (3)

The confirmation of the Bronze Age barrow, and associated cremations indicate that the site is significant. (4)

This feature was penannular in plan, with a possible entrance on the south western side. It was fairly large, with a diameter of approximately 36m. A total of nine slots were excavated through it, none of which produced any finds. The profile was fairly consistent throughout, with fairly wide regular, concave sides and a broadly concave base. A total of two confirmed cremations were recovered from the centre of the barrow, whilst another possible cremation was represented beside these as a small pit although no bone was recovered from the feature. Each of these features was located very close to each other, with the cremations covering an area no more than 1m wide. The cremated bone recovered from both burials was in a poor state of preservation and weighed significantly less than the average bone weight produced by modern crematoria. This meant that not a huge amount of information could be gleaned from the cremations. It was confirmed that each cremation only contained a single individual and that the age of the individual from the cremation was most likely an older juvenile or adolescent (7-18 years old). (4)
