Full Description

In 1857 the Palladian house of c.1730 by John Sanderson burnt down … [The] service wing built by Salvin in 1844-6 … survives. George Gilbert Scott, who at the time of the fire was making minor alterations to the house for John Manners-Sutton, M.P. for Newark, was given the opportunity to rebuild it. He made his plans in 1858, the builder William Cubitt & Co. laid the foundations in 1859, and the work … was almost finished by 1861. Manners-Sutton must have underestimated the cost … [because] many details were never completed. (1)
Work began in 1858, incorporating the service wing on the north side, but was never completely finished due to the lack of money. An Anglican order of monks, the Society of the Sacred Mission, tenanted the Hall from 1903 to 1973. In 1974 the Hall was sold and became the headquarters of Newark and Sherwood District Council. (2)

Clamp lime kiln uncovered during trial trenching in July 2020 may be related to repairs or reconstructed of house (3)
