Full Description

'Awsworth Colliery'. (1)
'Awsworth Colliery (disused)'. (2)
Traces of the former colliery workings were revealed, including the so-called Piper shaft that was abandoned in 1874. Nearby a large brick pillar still remains standing where it once supported a high level colliery tramline. Whilst the site was abandoned in 1899, evidence came to light of illicit coal working after this date. An adit had been used as an access point to a low level seam and coal had been removed by local people. (3)
