Full Description
The site (centred approximately on NGR SK 70655 34429) is located at Langar Lane, to the southeast of Langar and northeast of Colston Bassett in the Rushcliffe Borough of Nottinghamshire.
The north field has a complex network of positive linears defining rectangular enclosures and circular features. The small examples of these could be house plots, whereas the larger ones might be animal enclosures.
There is at least one ditched trackway running through the middle of the cluster.
In the south field, there is one sub-square enclosure (90m x 100m) with some suggestions of a re-cut along the eastern edge. In addition the enclosure contains a second smaller enclosed space (20m x 17m)which might be a house plot or a place to segregated animals from the herd.
To the south of this, at the very edge of the site is a small collection of linears, and to the north, a single northwest to southeast linear. Both of these are probably field boundaries. The settlement sits on a small ridge (c.5m above the surrounding land) in an otherwise flat area, which would have given access to the river and surrounding meadow whilst protecting the settlement from flooding.
The enclosure and fragments of field boundaries in the south field are also orientated on the river. However it is impossible to say whether any of them similarly date to the Roman period.
The density of features makes definitive interpretation from the survey data difficult, but the general
character of settlement is suggestive of a Roman site. (1)
The distribution of Roman pottery, broadly dating from the 1st to the 4th centu-ries AD, largely conformed to a complex of enclosures and ditches in the north-west corner of the site that had been identified by geophysical survey. Pieces of dense, heavy slag, indic-ative of ironworking, were found in the same area, indicating that iron smelting may have been carried out at the settlement during the Roman or subsequent Anglo-Saxon periods (2)
