Description

Detailed magnetic gradiometer survey was undertaken in connection with proposed development on land at Langar Lane, Colston Bassett, Nottinghamshire. The survey totalled c.19ha. The magnetic survey was carried out using a dual sensor Grad601-2 Magnetic Gradiometer manufactured by Barrington Instruments Ltd. Readings were taken at 0.25m intervals along traverses 1m apart. This equates to 6400 sampling points in a full 40m x 40m grid. Previous desk-based research found limited archaeological potential within the site area, but noted the low-probability of the presence of an early medieval graveyard associated with the parish boundary. However, the geophysical survey revealed an extensive settlement, probably of Roman date, as well as several undated field boundaries. A cluster of linears and pits in the north field almost certainly represents some kind of settlement. The density of features makes definitive interpretation from the survey data difficult, but the general character of settlement is suggestive of a Roman site. Indications of features crossing others may suggest they are of differing dates, and therefore imply some phasing within an extended period of occupation. The site is orientated on the river Smite to the west, which would have meandered closer than the 60m away it is today. The settlement sits on a small ridge (c.5m above the surrounding land) in an otherwise flat area, which would have given access to the river and surrounding meadow whilst protecting the settlement from flooding. The enclosure and fragments of field boundaries in the south field are also orientated on the river. However it is impossible to say whether any of them similarly date to the Roman period. However, it seems possible that all the features belong to a Roman rural landscape, as Iron Age or Roman crop marks have been identified immediately in the field to the south. Further Roman cropmarks have been identified 600m to the northwest, with the nearest Roman road, the Fosse Way, 4km to the west and the nearest town, that of Margidunum, 8km to the northwest.
