Full Description

Beneath an area of prominent ridge and furrow and part of the high pressure gas main are the remains of two square enclosures and a trackway. These features are situated in 2 fields close to the termination of a palaeochannel and the current course of the River Trent. (1)

An evaluation area was focused on the large enclosure and comprised multiple linear anomalies. Unfortunately, disturbance caused by the high pressure gas pipeline running across the site masked a large proportion of both the circuit and the interior of this enclosure. (2)

One evaluation trenchtargeted the north-eastern corner of the enclosure, specifically where the circuit ditch appeared to flare outwards and may have represented an entranceway or access point. Six ditches and one pit were identified across the trench, five of which were excavated. One ditch produced late iron Age/early Roman Pottery and another produced a lump of slag material. (2)

A second evaluation trench was situated along the south-western extent of the enclosure where the circuit ditch appeared to flare inwardly. In order to maximise its potential, the trench was excavated in a L-shape plan, which enabled the investigation of the circuit ditch and both of the inward flares. This trench was also the only one to be excavated through extant ridge and furrow on site. Furthermore, the south-western extent of the trench was excavated through a clear slope-break in the landscape where the extant ridge and furrow terminated. A single sherd of pottery dating from AD 170-400 was recovered from the fill of one V-shaped ditch. (2)

A third evaluation trench was located at the south-eastern corner of the enclosure where a series of linear anomalies were observed. A total of five ditches and four pits were identified, of which two ditches and three pits were excavated. Eight sherds of late Iron Age to early Roman pottery and a fragment of clinker fused to part of a crucible were recovered from the fill of one pit - this appeared to include fragments of metal working (copper alloy) waste. Fourteen sherds of late Iron Age to early Roman pottery were recovered from another pit and four sherds of pottery dating to the Roman period were recovered from a third pit. Two sherds of Roman pottery were recovered from the upper fill of an unexcavated ditch. (2)
