Description
In April 2016 an archaeological evaluation was undertaken at the site of a proposed new quarry at Barton-in-Fabis, Nottingham. 20 trenches were undertaken across the site. The trenches were targeted to encounter features identified in the geophysics results.
The site lies to the north-east of Barton-in-Fabis, Nottinghamshire, which is being considered for mineral extraction. The potential extraction site and proposed plant area comprises agricultural land on the southern bank of the River Trent and measures 87ha in area.
Based on the results the evaluation, as wellas the geophysical survey and geoarchaological test pits, the following features were identified;
• Round Barrow
• Residue flint assemblage including an early prehistoric leaf shaped arrowhead.
• Undated rectangular enclosure – ditchs, pits an postholes
• 4 Iron age/ Roma settlement focuses - intercutting ditches and gullies, pits, postholes and curvi-linear ditches. Charred cereals and quern oven remains indicating settlement as well as animal farming.
184 pieces of pottery were recovered and categorised by a specialist. The pottery ranges in date from late Iron Age/ Early Roman to post Medieval.
Environmental samples were taken, which identified charred cerals along with evidence of a quern and oven from one of the enclosures.
