Abstract/Summary
A geophysical (magnetometer) survey, covering approximately 30 hectares in total, was carried out on agricultural land north of Chestnut Lane, in Barton-in-Fabis, Nottinghamshire. The survey was undertaken to inform the determination of a planning application for proposed mineral extraction of the site. Although no known archaeological activity is recorded within the survey area the site has been assessed as having a high potential for prehistoric and Romano-British activity. Previously unknown archaeological enclosures have been detected. A number of potential enclosures and a single circular feature have been identified. Ridge and furrow has been detected across the whole survey area, this may have truncated earlier anomalies. However overall the former plough activity has not inhibited the identification of areas of significant archaeological activity. Anomalies indicative of the underlying gravel geology and modern disturbance have also been detected. The archaeological potential of the survey area, therefore, is deemed high in the areas of identified archaeological anomalies.
