Abstract/Summary
In April 2016, archaeological and geo-archaeological evaluations were undertaken at the site of a proposed new quarry at Barton-in-Fabis, Nottingham. 20 trenches and 10 geo-archaeological test pits were undertaken across the site as well as a geophysical investigation to build upon a previous assessment.
The evaluation revealed features of archaeological significance.
• Round Barrw - bronze age.
• Residue flint assemblag.e Much of the flint assemblage dated to the late Mesolithic, Neolithic / Bronze Ages, including a shaped arrow head.
• Undated rectangular enclosure – ditches pits ad postholes just to the west of the potential barrow may also date from the bronze age.
• 4 Iron age/ Roman (1,2 ,3,6) settlement focuses - intercutting ditches and gullies, pits, postholes and curvi-linear ditches. Charred cereals and quern oven remains indicating settlement as well as animal farming
184 sherds of pottery were recovered ranging from Late Iron Age to Post Medieval - The report contains a more detailed analysis. Animal bone was also recovered.
The site lies within the Trent Valley am area known for its rich floodplain archaeology with evidence of fish traps, log boats, mills and bridges recovered from post glacial sand and gravel deposits
This evaluation report is based on a DBA and geophysical investigations which took place prior to the test evaluation. The report contains a site map, geophysics and auger results and photographs of features taken during the works.
