Full Description

East-west ridge (one of two parallel earthworks) running across roughly midway through the field, and surrounded by ridge -and-furrow on either side. It may represent one of the boundaries marked on the 1769 map. It formerly extended across the full width of the field but the earthwork has recently been scalped by machine leaving only approximately ¼ of the bank untouched in the west. At least one break is evident in the surviving section of bank, though whether this was contemporary with its construction or a later alteration is not clear. The 1st Edition County Series depicts a rectangle of woodland in approximately the same location as this bank on the western side of the field. It is not
clear how the bank and the former area of woodland interacted and whether they were associated. Examination of patches of bare earth along the line of this bank revealed numerous animal bones, post Medieval pottery and clinker material just below the turf level.

There is ample evidence from documents and on the ground to suggest that the site was utilised for
habitation, or on the direct periphery of habitation, from at least the 18th century. Dating of the
earthwork features is not possible without further research or investigation but many of them have
the potential to be Medieval in origin. The field directly to the north over the road contains earthworks of a very similar character; a bank for the Catchwater Drain, ridge and furrow cultivation, building remains, and a number of east-west banks. The proximity of both fields to the moated manor house site recently identified in the ‘L’ shaped field to the north-west would support the potential for features to be of Medieval date.
