Full Description

There is ample evidence from documents and on the ground to suggest that the site was utilised for
habitation, or on the direct periphery of habitation, from at least the 18th century. Dating of the
earthwork features is not possible without further research or investigation but many of them have
the potential to be Medieval in origin. The field directly to the north over the road contains earthworks of a very similar character; a bank for the Catchwater Drain, ridge and furrow cultivation, building remains, and a number of east-west banks. The proximity of both fields to the moated manor house site recently identified in the ā€˜Lā€™ shaped field to the north-west (Masters, 2017, 5) would support the potential for features to be of Medieval date.
The complex of earthworks in this area are likely to represent remains of a planned Medieval
settlement associated with the moated manor site; part of the wider polyfocal Medieval settlement
of Sturton le Steeple that is noted by the reference in the Domesday Book
