Full Description
One of two pits uncovered that may be associated with charcoal making. Irregular oval shape, steep sides, shallow concave base. It had two fills: the lowest was a mix of redeposited yellowish-orange sand and dark brown/black sand with common charcoal. The upper fill was also a mix of redeposited natural sand, and mid-brown sand with occasional pebbles and charcoal flecks. None of the features produced finds, but a charcoal sample was collected from lower fill. Radiocarbon analysis of the sample suggest a post-medieval date most likely to the 17th-18th century AD.
Similar pits with burnt fills were identified in another evaluation south of Mansfield: the environmental assessment suggested that the material may have derived from an industrial activity, possibly forestry related. The presence of forests in the area surrounding the sites is noteworthy, which can be seen on the 1884 OS map (a small portion of which still survives today).
