Full Description
Sub-rectangular and had irregular moderately steep sides that sloped towards a narrow concave base. It was 0.40m deep and bigger than the other pits of the trench, measuring 1.15m in length. It was filled with soil and redeposited sand with abundant charcoal fragments. A sample of the deposit was collected for radiocarbon dating: analysis suggest a post-medieval date between the 16th and the 18th century AD
Similar pits with burnt fills were identified in another evaluation south of Mansfield: the environmental assessment suggested that the material may have derived from an industrial activity, possibly forestry related. The presence of forests in the area surrounding the sites is noteworthy, which can be seen on the 1884 OS map (a small portion of which still survives today).
