Description

Fourteen trenches measuring 50x2m were opened using a 360 degree excavator fitted with a smooth blade. In the absence of any specific data from the geophysical survey results the trenches were evenly spread across the site to provide a representative sample. Trench positions were influenced by several constraints, including a large balancing pond, spoil heaps and foul drainage. The northern portion of the site was already developed at the time the evaluation took place (this being Phase 1). Final trench positions were recorded using survey grade GPS. Where archaeological features were present, these were sample excavated and drawn in section at scale 1:20, and in plan at 1:50; a representative section of the trench baulk was drawn at scale 1:20 in each trench. Three samples were dispatched to the SUERC laboratory for radiocarbon dating. The evaluation revealed limited archaeological evidence, mostly consisting of pits with dark deposits incorporating redeposited natural sand mixed with charcoal. No artefacts were recovered, but radiocarbon dating from three charcoal samples provided useful chronological information.
