Full Description

A single linear feature, which appeared to run parallel to a recut ditch, was encountered.

The feature ran across the centre of the trench, and may have been on the same north-north-west to south-south-east alignment as the recut ditch roughly south-south-west of this feature, although the much smaller stretch exposed within the trench did not allow its orientation to be definitively established. Its dimensions and profile form were also broadly similar to, being 1.20m wide and 0.25m deep with steep sides and flat base, mid- to dark grey fill, and this feature had not been recut. No dating evidence was found in the ditch fill; a sherd of a late 2nd to early 4th-century Derbyshire ware jar and a prehistoric flint waste flake (which could not be dated more closely), redeposited in topsoil, were retrieved during machine excavation.

The two related undated ditches encountered were both roughly perpendicular to the stream that runs to the south of the southern site boundary and feeds the Fairham Brook, and it is possible that these represent part of a drainage system, comparable to an undated ditch found during the Phase 8 evaluation that may have emptiedinto the Fairham Brook itself at the north-eastern corner of the application area.
