Full Description

The ditch ran north-north-west to south-south-east across the northern end of the trench. The earlier cut of two, it was steep-sided, 1.00m wide and 0.50m deep, and may originally have had a flat base. Its clayey silt fill was cut down the middle by the narrower but deeper recut, which was unusual on site in having two fills. Neither phase of the ditch produced finds.

This ditch runs parallel to another ditch roughly north-north-east of this feature. The two related undated ditches encountered were both roughly perpendicular to the stream that runs to the south of the southern site boundary and feeds the Fairham Brook, and it is possible that these represent part of a drainage system, comparable to an undated ditch found during the Phase 8 evaluation that may have emptiedinto the Fairham Brook itself at the north-eastern corner of the application area.
