Full Description

One trench contained four ditches, one of which had been recut. Two linear anomalies correspond with two of the ditches. One of those ditches contained one fill and was recut on its western edge, which also contained a single fill. The other ditch had two fills, one of which contained 251 complete coins and 36 coin fragments. These are discussed in detail below. The context is a localised deposit within the ditch and is directly related to the deposition of the coin hoard. (1)

Another two ditches were not identified in the previous surveys, probably due to the shallow depth of the feature and the similarity between the fill of the feature and the surrounding geology. One of the ditches relates to a rudimentary footpath running on a northwest-southeast alignment across the field which is not present on historic maps and is likely to be a recent development. (1)

The only dating evidence recovered from the ‘brickwork’ enclosure in the north-west of the site was the large hoard of Roman coins, which were deposited no earlier than AD 249. It is possible that this hoard remained buried as it had lost much of its value through inflation. The coins indicate that the field system was extant in the mid-3rd century, but it is unclear when it was established and when it fell from use. Evidence of ditch re-cutting was seen in some sections, however, probably indicating that the same field boundaries were maintained over a period of time. (1)
