Description

The PDA comprises a single agricultural field with an area of 11.2ha. It is on the north-eastern limit of Harworth and is bounded immediately to the south-east by Bawtry Road, to the north by the A631 and to the west by further open fields. Excavation of the trenches was carried out using a mechanical excavator equipped with a toothless ditching bucket until either the top of the first archaeological horizon or undisturbed natural was reached. The resulting surface was inspected for archaeological remains. Linear features were excavated in slots at least 1m in length in order to investigate their depth and profile and to recover finds, whilst discreet features were 50% sampled. Generally the features corresponded well with the geophysical survey anomalies, with the only exception in one evaluation trench where the feature at the south of the trench was not identified. Where both crop marks and geophysical survey data concur, archaeological features were typically exposed. However, where only cropmark data were present, archaeological features were not always observed. This could be a result of the cropmarks being identified several prior to the geophysical survey, during which time features may have been significantly damaged by the ongoing agricultural activity. The only dating evidence recovered from the ‘brickwork’ enclosure in the north-west of the site was the large hoard of Roman coins, which were deposited no earlier than AD 249. It is possible that this hoard remained buried as it had lost much of its value through inflation. The coins indicate that the field system was extant in the mid-3rd century, but it is unclear when it was established and when it fell from use. Evidence of ditch re-cutting was seen in some sections, however, probably indicating that the same field boundaries were maintained over a period of time. No further evidence was found to confirm the date of the large sinuous boundary ditch running north-west to the south-east across the PDA.
