The proposed development area is located at the north-east end of the village and is bounded to the north by the A631 (Bawtry Road) and to the south-east by a road also known as Bawtry Road. It is bounded to the south-west by housing and to the west by cultivated fields and is located on the boundary between Nottinghamshire and South Yorkshire. Bartington Grad601 magnetic gradiometers were used during the survey, taking readings at 0.25m intervals on zig-zag traverses 1m apart within 30m by 30m grids, so that 3600 readings were recorded in each grid. The geophysical survey has confirmed the (probably differential) survival of sub-surface archaeological features forming part of a ‘brickwork’ pattern of field division and enclosure, confirming and enhancing the cropmark evidence. Previous archaeological investigations of similar features in the immediate area suggest these pattern of field system is likely to be of late prehistoric (Iron Age) or Roman date. No discrete anomalies, which could be indicative of settlement activity, have been identified. However, the magnetic background is extremely variable, due to the superficial deposits of sands and gravels, and the presence of discrete archaeological features cannot be dismissed.
