Full Description

A total of seven shallow pits or postholes lay within the enclosure. They ranged in size from 0.6m in diameter and 0.1m deep up to 1.6m in diameter and 0.15m deep. The features did not form any recognisable pattern that might indicate the presence of one or more buildings, but most lay near the southern edge of the excavated area, suggesting that activity was focussed further to the south, in the centre of the enclosure.

There were few datable finds within these shallow features, although one pit contained two fragments of 2rd or 3rd century pottery, whileanother pit contained a
single, small piece of grey ware vessel (not closely datable). What appeared to be part of an iron ladle or spoon was also recovered from the fill of a posthole at the southern edge of the excavated area. While artefacts were relatively rare, a considerable quantity of carbonised plant remains was identified. The one pit containing the two pottery fragments also contained a quantity of hazel and willow or alder, together with heather and conifer charcoal. It also contained charred cereal grains of barley, wheat (probably emmer) and especially charred oats, although it was uncertain whether these were wild or cultivated varieties. Eighteen other, poorly-preserved grains were also identified. The pit containg the small piece of grey ware, in turn, contained a small quantity of hazel charcoal, but also 89 cereal grains, mostly poorly-preserved but with eighteen identifiable as emmer wheat.
