Description
The Worksop STW is situated to the south-east of the town, in an area of mixed arable and pasture land. It lies immediately north of the railway line between Sheffield and Lincoln, while the River Ryton and Chesterfield Canal both pass the works a short distance further south.
A section of the permanent access road, 260m in length was subject to archaeological excavation, in the area where geophysical survey identified the enclosures. A sample of the proposed extension area comprising a 1m-wide strip around the perimeter, was also stripped to test for the presence of archaeological features.
The surface of each exposed archaeological feature and spoil heap was metal-detected prior to excavation. Each feature was hand-excavated according to the percentage stated in the WSI. Following recording of the features, all the remaining fills were removed stratigraphically by hand (discrete features and gullies) or by machine (ditches), in order to maximise recovery of datable finds.
Excavation and monitoring as part of the extension to the Worksop Sewage Treatment Works has uncovered elements of a Roman-period farmstead. Two enclosures and related field ditches lay to the south of Rayton Farm, on ground overlooking the River Ryton. The farmstead was probably occupied in the 3rd and early 4th centuries AD, but there is evidence for activity on the site earlier in the Roman period, possibly starting in the late 1st century. The occupation is slightly later than the majority of investigated sites, although this date is not without parallels.
