Full Description

Cutting the subsoil were five features. Towards the north was a feature which was truncatedby the machining and only caught in profile. It had steep sides and a concave base. It was at least 0.9m wide and 0.42m deep, with a firm mid grey clayey silt fill, truncated by an animal burrow. It contained two fragments of 18th-20th century brick.

In the centre of the trench were two linear features on an east west alignment, roughly 7m apart. However they had quite different profiles. The feature further northeast had steep sides, a concave base and was 0.92m wide and 0.28m deep. The feature to the southwest had shallow sides and a flat base and was 1.2m wide and 0.23m deep. Both features had similar firm mid grey-brown clayey silt fills, with fragments of 17th-18th century pottery.

To the southwest of the trench were two more parallel linear features, these on a northeastsouthwest orientation. The features touched and had a similar shallow sided and flat based profile, just over 0.15m deep. The northeastern feature was narrower at 0.82m wide and the southwestern feature wider at 1.28m wide and contained fragments of post medieval pottery. Both had a soft dark brownish grey clayey silt fill. The south western feature contained early-mid 18th century pottery.

No obvious function could be ascribed to most of the features, although the three linear features towards the southwest of the trench had the shallow sides and broad flat bases often associated with furrows. However, they were on different orientations and not evenly spaced, which argues against this interpretation. Seven meters to the northeast of the possible furrows was a ditchwhich shared an orientation with the closest example. This may be a drainage ditch associated with the edge.
