Full Description

A rectangular enclosure with an adjacent straight ditch running away at a right angle. (1)
Further AP evidence revealed an extensive area of associated linear features, which form a "brickwork" field pattern. Also associated are further rectangular enclosures. Double ditched linear features suggest trackways within the system. (2) (3) (4) (5) (6) (7)
Cropmarks of a cluster of subrectangular enclosures partly obliterated by the Great North Road, are associated with brickwork plan fields possibly of Ro date. 3 enclosures are at least 0.45Ha in area and are subdivided into smaller compartments. At SK 657855, an isolated subrectangular enclosure is 0.35Ha in area and has an internal compartment of 300sqm. The fields are less regular than those to the S of the double ditch. There are signs of a change of plan at c SK 654862, where the double ditched boundaries to the N are longer and the fields broader than usual. Gaps between the ditches are from 3.5 to 5.5m. (8)
Morph: 131.1.1 Roman field system (also L's 4824, 4826, 4827), 131.1.2 Roman farmstead, 131.1.3 Roman stock enclosure, 131.1.5 Roman enclosure. All part of group: Roman settlement (4824, 4826, 4827, 4830, 4832), 131.5.1, 131.6.1 unknown prehistoric enclosure, ?131.7.1 group: unknown prehistoric settlement. (9)
Trench for water main along Great North Road. The trench section did not reveal evidence of ancient features … either due to the constraints on observation of the narrow trench or truncation of features during the construction of the road. (10)
In trench B, 3 relatively shallow ditches and one deeper ditch were recorded. The S shallow ditch had a butt end within the trench. The N shallow ditch was cut by the deeper ditch. The primary fill of the largest ditch contained a post-hole. The butt end of a ditch was seen in trench M. (11)
Very extensive, grid ref centred - includes cluster of enclosures S of track, W of Trinity College Farm.
See L8757 for excavations. See L10791 for trapezoidal enclosure.. See L4825-7 - continuation to W, L4830 - to S, L4832 - to E.
See SMR map.
