Fieldwalking survey carried out by TPAT within the boundary of a proposed gravel extraction site to the W of Collingham village. The area was walked in a series of transects, spaced 10m apart from centre to centre. Walkers searched up to a metre either side, giving a c.20% sample of field surface. All artefacts of medieval and earlier date were recorded, all except FCP and building stone were collected and retained for analysis. Two fields on the E side of the proposed area were rewalked after further weathering of their surfaces to test whether an observed difference between artefact densities in these fields and the rest of the gravel island was real.
