Description

The site is approximately 0.845ha in extent, and comprises a single triangular arable field located alongside the B6420 Mansfield Road, to the south-west of Retford. The evaluation fieldwork comprised the excavation of six trenches, each measuring 30m long by 1.8m wide. Despite the archaeological potential of the area, with the Site located within a landscape of extensive Romano-British brickwork-plan field systems, the evaluation only recorded two undated parallel east/west aligned ditches in a trench, one of which was also identified in further trench and extended across the southern portion of the site. It is possible that the two ditches in the one trench form a partial trackway or represent part of a wider field system such as the Romano-British brickwork field system immediately to the east of the site.
