The site comprises c. 20ha over two areas situated to the south of Shireoaks. The site is situated to the south of Steetley Lane with land consisting of two fields of recently worked arable ground. It is bounded to the south by a railway line, to the west by Steetley quarry, to the east by farm buildings, and to the north by Steetley Lane. The survey was undertaken using Bartington Grad601 magnetic gradiometers. These were employed taking readings at 0.25m intervals on zig-zag traverses 1.0m apart within 30m by 30m grids, so that 3600 readings were recorded in each grid. The geophysical survey has detected a number of magnetic anomalies associated with archaeological and possible archaeological origins in the forms of a ‘D’shaped enclosure, possible smaller enclosures and a field system. Uncertain anomalies may be associated with former quarrying. Former field boundaries have been recorded along with modern ploughing. Areas of magnetic enhancement may be associated with ‘green waste’ manuring, but a geological or agricultural origin is also likely. A service pipe has been recorded bisecting the northern field. Magnetic disturbance along the limits of the survey area is due to interference from metal fencing within the boundaries and also the railway line in the southeast.
