Full Description

Linear features, fields and droveways - more regular than those to the N of the double ditch. 5 fields are from 1.2 to 3.0Ha in area. (1)
Sections were cut across ditches forming the cropmarks; they varied from 0.7 to 2.2m wide and from 0.5-0.98m deep. In general they had a flat bottom 0.5-1.0m wide. The distance between paired ditches ranged from 3m to 6m. In trench D, a shallow ditch and a post-hole line [were] 5m N and parallel to the double ditch. The ditch fill in trench J contained abraded greyware sherds, the primary fill of the southern ditch in trench G produced a bodysherd in a calcite gritted fabric of C1 BC or AD. An unabraded sherd of C2 Nene Valley ware was discovered in the uppermost fill of trench D. Only trench T produced any stratified features. Initially the E-W ditch turned N, the N-S arm being recut three times, before two later recuts of the E-W ditch continued it E. Three pits were dug within the area of the intersection. A ditch was later cut parallel to, and E of, the N-S ditch, terminating in the same area. (2) (3) (4)
Trench for water main along Great North Road. The trench section did not reveal evidence of ancient features … either due to the constraints on observation of the narrow trench or truncation of features during the construction of the road. (5)
Continuation of L4829 - to N, L4823,4 - to W.
See L11019,20 and 21 for fieldwalking finds.
