Description

The proposed development site is located off Nottingham Road in Radcliffe on Trent, within the administrative borough of Rushcliffe. It is situated 8.5km east of Nottingham. The site is approximately 11.5 hectares and comprises three agricultural fields. The trial trenching strategy comprised excavation of 20 trenches, each measuring 50m long by 1.8m wide. The evaluation identified features of archaeological interest in 7 of the 20 trenches, with 8 trenches being blank or containing only natural features. Natural and modern features were recorded in 3 Trenches and undated features in 2 trenches. A focus of early medieval to medieval activity was identified within the northwest part of the site in the first three trenches, which was not identified in the geophysical survey or previous trial trenching. Evidence from environmental sampling suggests final crop processing and storage was occurring in the immediate vicinity. The area appeared to be separated from a large agricultural zone to the south, by a linear boundary. Medieval to post-medieval activity was recorded at the north end of the east field, again represented by a number of pits and ditches, producing small amounts of later medieval pottery and tile. Environmental evidence suggests a grassland habitat was present in this area, and geoarchaeological analysis suggests that activity was taking place along a broad terrace aligned north – south through this area of the site. The only other activity of note was a brick structure of probable post-medieval to early modern date, and a post-medieval boundary at the south end of the site.
