Abstract/Summary

An archaeological evaluation by trial trenching was undertaken on land north of Nottingham Road, Radcliffe on Trent, Nottinghamshire, as a condition of planning consent for a residential development. The site lies within an area of archaeological interest from the prehistoric era onwards. Archaeological works close to the site have identified remains including prehistoric flints from gravel extraction, with Iron Age and Roman activity recorded nearby at Holme Pierrepoint. A geophysical survey of the site revealed a number of archaeological anomalies including extensive ridge and furrow, as well as field boundaries, a cart trackway and miscellaneous magnetic responses. A subsequent limited evaluation recorded a small number of undated linear features and a ditch containing medieval pottery. Twenty trenches were excavated, each measuring 50m long by 1.8m wide. The first eleven trenches were located west of the current field boundary, the last nine trenches were located east of the boundary. Eight trenches were blank or contained only natural features. Natural and modern features were recorded in three trenches and undated features in two trenches. A focus of early medieval to medieval activity was identified within the northwest part of the site in the first three trenches, which was not identified in the geophysical survey or previous trial trenching. Evidence from environmental sampling suggests final crop processing and storage was occurring in the immediate vicinity. The area appeared to be separated from a large agricultural zone to the south, by a linear boundary. Medieval to post-medieval activity was recorded at the north end of the east field, again represented by a number of pits and ditches, producing small amounts of later medieval pottery and tile. Environmental evidence suggests a grassland habitat was present in this area, and geoarchaeological analysis suggests that activity was taking place along a broad terrace aligned north – south through this area of the site. The only other activity of note was a brick structure of probable post-medieval to early modern date, and a post-medieval boundary at the south end of the site.
